Christmas Organizer w/Printables Our gift to You! 1001 971 Mona Corwin

I can almost hear the cry in the streets as women woke up this morning and realized it’s 15 days until Christmas! And then I realized I was one of them. YIKES!

Frustration and panic was starting to settle in along with the guilt and the stress. Until I shouted… “NOT THIS YEAR”! It was time for me to give myself a good talking to..and this is what I said.

1.Take a deep breath
I know this sounds trivial but really your shoulders are starting to look like they are part of your ears. We need to deep breath more is moves the blood around and lets face it your turning pale just thinking of all you have to do.

2. Take a media fast
Stay off the news or other information that will add to what’s all ready a ton of stuff in your head. Now is not the time to figure out global warming or how to set your New Years Resolution.

3. Drop the Guilt and try this
Here’s the reality you aren’t going to get everything on Pinterest done this year. So do NOT let guilt and discourgement settle in. Choose a different thought process.

Instead be a forward thinker. Create a Pinterest board right now that’s called “Next Year”. You’re going to see the best Pinterest has to offer during this time. And your friends will have stuff at their next party that you adore. DO NOT try to add them to your already long list for this Christmas. Instead add it to the Next Year List.

Pinterest isn’t a bad place. It’s a great helper. We are the ones that have to find the balance between it helping us and overwhelming ourselves.

4. Get organized with an organizer
It won’t take that much time and it will save you tones in the long run. I have used a Christmas Organizer Notebook for years and I’m telling you it is so worth it.

This year I had our amazing Balanced MomLife team member Ali Lyons create some pretty pages for me. And I want to share them with you for free. Merry Christmas Lil Mumma.

Christmas Organizer free printable download

So get a cup of coffee, print off these pages and pop them in a folder or just staple the thing together (we’re looking for effective not gorgeous right?)

I know the kids might be screaming and the dryer dinging that its done, but lil mumma you got to get those thousands of details out of your brain and on paper so you can focus. The best things in life aren’t things… but we got to get things done!

5.Everyday ask yourself these questions
*What am I grateful for today?
*What is essential today?
*What can I do if I have time?
*What can be put on the next year list?

6.Time for a reality check
Realize this is only a season. It is not a reflection on character or your ability to be a great wife and mom. It’s a holiday. It’s suppose to be happy and cheery. So drop everything at some point in each day and spend time with God, Your man and your darling kids. These are the memory makers. Quiet in front of the tree with a book or The Jesus Advent Tree. Kisses with you man after every little one is asleep. God created celebrations for us to remember. Remember all the things in life that are precious especially His Son.

I’m talking to myself today as well as you lil Mumma. I’m not going to panic when I look at the calendar countdown today and I don’t want you to panic either. Instead I’m going take that deep breath and focus and enjoy the wonders of the Christmas… after I print off my own pretty organizer sheets.

Merry Christmas Lil Mumma.

lies about motherhood

4 Lies About Motherhood Exposed

4 Lies About Motherhood Exposed 1040 1280 Mona Corwin

Sitting at a stoplight in the pouring rain, I saw her as she struggled to get her toddler unbuckled and out of her SUV. I thought to myself, “It’s really early to be out with a little one.” I continued my train of thought as I watched her shield her child from getting wet. “Moms are like that. They get wet, just to keep their babies dry.” I smiled as I watched her hand her baby to a woman at the door and quickly turn to get back in the car. What I saw next gripped my heart.

Safe in the car I could see she was crying very hard. Hands over her face and her wet head bent toward the steering wheel. My heart went out to her. I envisioned her posting later.

#MamaCouldHardlyDropHerOff

The light changed and I turned into my neighborhood.

My attention was quickly redirected as I saw a 4-year-old running in the rain toward a large puddle. Arms in the air to get the maximum height, he took the leap and landed smack in the middle, splashing water all over his 1-year-old brother who was giggling so hard his pacifier fell out. Their mom was running behind them laughing and capturing the moment on her iPhone.

I knew this little family, so I rolled down my window to join in the moment. Breathless the mom waved and said, “Some days you just have to start out with a pajama run in the rain.”

We both laughed and I turned into my driveway. As the garage door went up I checked my Instagram. I laughed out loud again. She had just posted the moment and I smiled as I pushed play and watched again the pajama rain run commentated by a laughing, breathless mumma. Her hastag?

#SomeThursdaysGottaStartRunningintheRain

I was surprised by the lump in my throat as emotion washed over my heart. Two moms in the rain, two different stories, two different mothering styles.

DON’T Stop Reading It’s about this time in the post that you might want to quit reading. You may think that I’m going to bash working moms. Or belittle moms who stay at home. I’m not going to do either.

What if there was another mothering style option? What if we stopped believing the lies about motherhood?

If we claim to be an enlightened and advanced society how have we come to the place where family is sacrificed for things, and moments exchanged for objects?

Why are there only two storylines for mothers? Women must give up their dreams for their children or they must give up their children for their dreams?

Deep in my heart I believe both options are wrong. I believe there is another option, another way, and another story to be told. And I hope it will inspire you whether you’re crying or laughing in the rain today.

[Tweet “Why only two storylines for mothers? Give up dreams for children or Give up children for dreams? Mona Corwin”]

The 4 lies about motherhood

I believe there are prevailing lies in our world. Lies that have become the outlines for the stories women are writing for themselves. And these lies have kept women captured in the “work or not work” drama.

Lies like:

  • You can have it all… I’m superwoman
  • You will get left behind… I’m the oppressed
  • You can’t have it all so just give it up… I’m the martyr

And the worse mom-heart ripping lie: The kids will be fine. They will adjust. It’s school right? No wait he’s a baby. Let’s be honest it’s really a daycare…. I’m replaceable.

Let me make myself clear

You lil mumma are not superwoman, oppressed, or a victim and you certainly are not replaceable. The world has cast a role of womanhood, motherhood and marriage that is not attainable. It puts women at odds with their innate callings and instead of being able to support each other they’re at one another’s throats.

That’s not the storyline any of us want to live.

[Tweet “Enlightened society? Why then is family sacrificed for things and moments exchanged for objects? Mona Corwin”]

A New Story

I believe it is time to break the lies and gather around to support each other and write another story. One that focuses on a woman’s core callings, her individual gifts and talents while still creating a home environment where people flourish and God is center. This kind of mothering style can and does exist.

Wonder how? Well, that’s what the Balanced MomLife is going to be talking about. Finding your calling, finding your balance and living your story.

I believe that we can break the lies and find our way home to our children without giving up our gifts and talents. And I believe that our time in history makes this more feasible than ever before.

Let me ask you this:

  • If you want to be at home with your little ones? Why aren’t you?
  • If you want to pursue your gifts and talents? Why have you given up on them?
  • If you don’t know the answer to these questions then maybe I can help.

Let’s do this

As your virtual Life Coach, I want to help you find your calling, find your balance, and live your story. You can be the woman, wife and mother your want to be and create a home that nourishes the lives in it… including your own.

This post is only the beginning of the story. Virtual coaching and mentoring is what this website is all about. I’ll have posts, tips, conversations, troubles revealed and problems solved in the life of this blog. There will be things you may want to add to the script of your life and lots we all might need to leave on the editing room floor. One thing is for sure… you don’t have to do it alone.

Wander around the site or click here to get updates. I’ll let you know when I post fresh content from the 4 ingredients to the Secret Sauce of living a balanced mom life story.

What prevailing lies have you believed about your motherhood, womanhood and marriages? Let’s talk. I’ll be over on Facebook. Come join me and other moms who are writing their stories too.

See you there…

Hugs,

Mona

Mom tears

Mom Tears: If You’re A Mom You Get It!

Mom Tears: If You’re A Mom You Get It! 500 500 Mona Corwin

It was happening again. The TSA guy at the Nashville airport was giving me the eye. Not because I looked suspicious but because I was crying. Again. You know that ugly cry that has people wondering if your being abused or taken against your will. Actually, for me it felt like both. I was about to board a plane that would separate me from two of my adult kids by hundreds of miles. I knew I shouldn’t be crying. They are both happy and flourishing in God’s plan for them. I knew I would see them very soon. And I knew I couldn’t stop crying. Ugh. I wish I could get better at leaving them but I fail every time at pulling off a cheery goodbye.

If you’re a mom you get it.

You might even get a lump in your throat just reading my intro. You get it because mothers are connected to their children in a miraculous way. Perhaps God knew how much love and work it would take to be a mother. Perhaps He knew about the constant laying aside of her own life a woman would sacrifice for her children to be able to live their own. But I think He chose mothers for a great purpose. Motherhood reveals to the world a part of God, His tenderness and His love that could never be displayed if there were no mothers.

God embedded a mystery inside a woman that mirrors His loving care of His own children. What a privilege to represent God in such a special way.

If you’re a mom you get it.

Did you know that from the beginning God created motherhood to be pain free and void of tears? But because of the Eve’s fall in the garden, the curse of “pain in childbirth” entered and still exists today.

However, God is a good God and although there is pain He has lavished motherhood with a joy/pain/pride combo that sustains us all throughout our mothering.

If you’re a mother you may recognize some of these:

  • The sorrow of miscarriage ends in the joy birth.
  • The defeat of infertility gives way to the exhilaration of adoption.
  • After 9 months we can’t wait to give birth. Only to discover that having our baby in another room makes us uneasy.
  • The excitement of the first day of kindergarten crumbs as our “super hero backpack” boy walks into a classroom and the doors shut and we can’t see him.
  • Tears of pride run as our child crosses a hard earned finish line after years of frustration just getting them to practice.
  • A new season begins as the thrill of a college found produces tears of where did the time go.
  • And then the joyful watershed of understanding as your child looks at you with new eyes as she holds her first child.

She’s a mom now and so she gets it.

It’s a hard thing to explain how a mother’s tears can flow with joy, pride and pain all at the same time. It’s just the way it is… Mom’s cry and sometimes they just can’t explain it. And whether they are the silent streams running down her face, or the gushing Kleenex blowing kind. One thing is for sure. A mother’s tears speak volumes about the deep love she carries in her heart for her children. A God placed love that only He and they understand.

And if you’re a mom you get it.

Girl,  it’s Mother’s Day, go ahead and cry if you want to. It’s ok if people are puzzled and wonder why. They may not understand this God created mystery called motherhood.

May I suggest that you just embrace the tenderness that God placed in your heart? Counting it as a beautiful gift from God.

So, go ahead grab a tube of waterproof mascara and a pretty box of Kleenex and let those tears flow. Oh and when you see another mom tearing up, hand her a few tissues and offer a knowing glance because…

You’re a mom and you get it.

disciplining kids

2 Must Have’s For Disciplining Kids & #1 Thing To Never Leave Out

2 Must Have’s For Disciplining Kids & #1 Thing To Never Leave Out 640 430 Mona Corwin

Hey lil Mumma… Psst… I got a question.

How are your kids behaving? Do they take your discipline with humble agreement? Or do they scream like bloody murder when you say no to the huge bag of cotton candy they just ripped open at Target?

If your like I use to be you simply smile at the people around you as if you are in total control and know exactly what you’re going to do next. Disciplining kids is easy.

But I didn’t know, and discipline wasn’t easy. Inside I was embarrassed and felt like a failure as a mom.

Truth be told, the other people watching the sticky mess know exactly how you feel. They most likely have had their cotton candy moments too.

I remember that feeling well. And that’s precisely why I look for lil Mumma’s in the grocery store. If I find one, if I walk straight up to her and say… it’s ok Lil Mumma they’ll get it. You’re doing a great job, hang in there.

You’d think I’d get a “mind your own business” look. But I usually get a look of relief that someone understand. Hugs usually ensue.

What’s my discipline advice?

I get asked this question a lot. After all I’ve been doing this for decades. Methods very and new ideas are coming along all the time. Some things worked and some things only worked for like one time. I suggest you try everything that seems good to you. You’re a good mom. A smart woman. And you know your children.

But from the voice of one who’s been there and done that for quite awhile I do have a few things that always worked.

And here they are: The two things that you must have in your discipline and the number one thing you should never leave out.

The Must Haves

#1 Consistency

You probably already know this, but it really is important? Yep consistency is key to any discipline method. Time out works if you follow through. Counting also works if you follow through. Swats work … well you get the picture. Discipline can seem like war at times. But your follow through is essential to any victory on this behavioral frontline.

Kids can smell wishy-washy. Empty threats and “wait till your dad comes home” undermines your authority. Kids actually do best when they know where behavioral boundaries are drawn. My husband really helped out here by clearly stating to the kids that mom was the boss and that he backed me up all the way.

Struggling with consistency?

Check your emotions when you discipline.

  • If you’re too angry, do not discipline.
  • If you are distracted, talking on phone or working on something do not discipline.

Try this first. It is a simple technique, but sometimes-hard things are simple.

  • Take a deep breathe before you threaten a consequence.
  • Think it through. It’s ok to send your child to their room until you can get your thoughts together.
  • Then be firm and follow through with discipline and consequences if needed.

You can’t be in a hurry. So if you are rushed, inform your sweet pea that there will be a conversation when you get home. Then make sure you do it.

#2 The No Shame Approach

Discipline is a good thing a necessary thing that trains children into healthy, well-balanced adults. This developing and training and correcting stuff is hard work. But it’s your job as a parent and you can do it. Remember, your learning too.

You don’t need to be ashamed if your child is acting up and needs to be corrected. We are all learning to behave, right? Your girlfriend’s kids may look perfect but they have a sin nature that has to be trained too.

Let’s just agree as moms to stick together and comfort each other as we do the best we can. And for heavens sake can we just stop the “I can’t believe your kid… shame game?

After all we are not trying to raise great kids, we are trying to raise godly adults that do great things for God.

Shame is not from God. And shame based discipline isn’t either.

We want to convict our children not condemn them. It is vital that children understand that who they are as a person is separate from what they do.

Understanding that “who” they are is loved and cherished and safe. While firmly stating that what they are doing must be changed. It is much easier to repent for a behavior and turn from it. It is almost impossible to repent for who you are. Shame for who you are is very difficult to overcome.

Be clear what action or attitude you do not like and then just as clear what you want instead.

Here are a few examples:

Who They Are    vs     What They Do

Your bad                             You are acting poorly

You make me sick             I know you can do better

You’re a brat                      That behavior is unacceptable

The One Thing You Should NEVER Leave Out

The WHY

Know why you want the behavior your asking for. This is the biggest and best advice I have on discipline.

Without sounding too spiritual, my why, my purpose for discipline is that I want my children to have the character of God. Made in His image I desire for them to reflect Him in every area. I desire to see the fruit of the spirit in their actions and attitudes. I want them to love, have empathy and experience true compassion for others. Just like Jesus.

Our method

When we saw a behavior that needed to change we:

  1. Pointed out the behavior.
  2. Explained how it was wrong.
  3. What we wanted to see instead.
  4. Then shared “the why” for the change.
  5. Concluding with either informing them of the consequences if behavior continued, or administered correction if appropriate.
  6. Then reinforcing worth, love and belonging with hugs and words of encouragement. Always ending with a smile and good eye contact.

This is a great method but it is the “Why” that makes it work. The why is so important. Every time I have disciplined well, and trust me I haven’t always gotten it right either. But when I have it is because I was aware of why I was disciplining. I knew that something needed to be removed and what needed to be replaced. I was aware of what character trait; fruit of the spirit or Christ like attitude was the goal.

Example: 6-year-old Johnny tells a lie.

“Johnny lying is wrong.”

“Dad and I want you to always tell the truth no matter what.”

“Do you know why we want you to tell the truth?”

“Because God never lies and we are made to act just like Him.”

Example: 14-year-old Johnny hits his sister.

“Johnny hitting your sister is unkind and wrong”

“You are growing into a young man and men protect women. Men are to cherish women and treat them tenderly even when a man may feel angry. That means choosing not to use strength to force women but to communicate with words.”

“Johnny, just as God is slow to anger and tender in his rebukes. So should you be to your sister.”

I could probably go on and on. It’s a big job this discipline thing. But it is our job as parents. We can’t rely on the schools or even the church to do it for us.

The good news is you are perfect for the job. God gave you his word, His attributes and a love for your children that no one on earth has. Hang in there lil mumma and don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice from us mumma’s that have been there. We want to help.

So the next time your darling starts screaming or misbehaving in the store, remember to take a deep breath, know your why and be consistent. And if that isn’t working look for me, I just might be on the next aisle with a hug.

Good Job Lil Mumma (Amy Pierson)

Good Job Lil Mumma (Amy Pierson) 1774 1774 Mona Corwin

<GUEST POST> My sweet friend Amy Pierson is guest posting for us this week. Amy is our social media director and she does a great job. Amy has worn many hats in her lifetime including, Girls Minister at Prestonwood Church. She was my co-author for “Table for Two” published by Lifeway in 2010. Since then Amy has taken her on her favorite role of SAHM and is flourishing with her husband Kyle and 2 little ones in Plano, Texas.

Today is Palm Sunday. For the last few weeks I’ve been texting back and forth sharing Easter ideas with girlfriends who have kids with similar ages. One of my friends even wrote a blog filled with great ideas! I’m so thankful for the encouragement we all get from each other!

My 19 month old was sick with a fever and I sadly couldn’t go to church this am. My husband took my very excited 3 year old. She’s generally an excited kid, but today she was bouncing off the walls. We had been talking about Easter with the Jesus Storybook Bible, resurrection eggs, and crafts. I knew our church would give her a palm branch. I told her as they were leaving and she was thrilled! She came home waving it and squealing hosanna non-stop. I cracked up and took a video to email to my family. I just happened to be texting with Mona, a mom mentor, so I sent her the video. She immediately wrote back, “adorable! Good job lil mumma!”

I shared the video on Instagram later, but Mona’s congrats felt better than all the likes. I knew she wasn’t just “liking” that my kid is funny or cute. She was affirming that reading to my kids and getting my kid excited about Christ is well worth it. She was reminding me that making even the smallest disciple takes effort but it is a job well done.

It is too fun and easy to snap a pic and get liked on social media. I mean we all have cute kids, and it’s not our fault they’re hilarious too. Ha

But, her text reminded me that I’m so blessed to have a group of godly older women who not only agree my kid is cute, but affirm my training and teaching them. The days can be long and physically exhausting, but I’m thankful to look up from the diapers and see godly older women who have godly adult kids cheering me on.

Do you have a godly woman at your church who gives you and others an awesome example to not only persevere but also enjoy this season of littles? Send this to her and tell her job well done!
