Bucket List

Bucket List 1920 1080 Chase Jennings

I’m all about living life full out with … NO REGRETS!

I bet that sounds good to you too. It really isn’t that hard. In fact it can be fun. Let me explain.

I’m sure you’ve heard of a bucket list. You know things they want to do before they “kick the bucket” and die.

While the idea is good. I don’t like the premise. A bit morbid and a bid sad. Who wants to check off stuff that moves you closer to death? Ugh.

So…. I put a spin on it.

Me and my man started something new… a Living List. We call it our “Just Us List”. This list holds all the things we want to do together, live out together, have fun doing together. Things that are Just US!

Like:

  • Laying on A beach somewhere every year
  • Golf at Spy Glass in Carmel, CA
  • Stay at a jungle hut that’s over the water- all alone.
  • Light more fires in our fireplace even when its June.
  • …and some that I can’t type. *Wink.

You get the idea. It’s been fun to dream and scheme again.

I want to live with NO REGRETS in our marriage. I don’t want to get to our 50th wedding anniversary and discover that my man had always wanted to hike Yosemite and I never knew.
Don’t you want to live a life of expectations of good things to come? To live intentionally. Making life happen for you not always responding to life that’s happening to you?

To live the Great Adventure together. Full out. Laughing and scheming and connecting like never before.

Let me ask…. If you and your man had a “JUST Us List” what would be on it?
Take the “Just Us Marriage List” Challenge. Grab your man, a sunset and do some dreaming together again and start living a NO REGRETS marriage.

Hugs,
Mona

3 Red-Hot Secrets for Winning in Marriage

3 Red-Hot Secrets for Winning in Marriage 1707 2560 Mona Corwin

3 Red-Hot Secrets for Winning in Marriage

When people ask us what our secret is to being married for 40 years and still have a red-hot love, we just look at each other as if we are secretly asking each other  “Should we tell?”

Not that we don’t want to help, we do. We just wonder if anyone would believe the simplicity of it.

We like our little secret.  And just because I’m your Mom coach I’m gonna share it with you.

We do have a red hot love, but what draws us deeper into our marriage relationship is an on going secret game we play.

It’s not the board kind of game or the “he said, she said” kind either. It actually isn’t a sit down and play game at all, it’s a on going challenge that we have been playing for 40 years. And oh how my man loves a challenge.  Game or challenge we call it our secret.  The name? “We simply try to out serve each other.”

And right now he is winning.

As I write this post I am recovering from knee surgery. Warren has taken care of me for 3 weeks straight with 3 more to go. He’s scoring points by making sure I have 3 meals a day, ice for my knee, middle of the night trips to the potty and even acted as my Physical Therapist when they weren’t showing up.

Oh and did I mention I have fresh roses all the time and daily encouragement when I just wanted to cry.

Today I winked at him and said, “Looks like your winning again with all this tender care of me. I’m going to have to step up my game when I’m better.” He smiled a knowing smile back at me and said, “Yep wonder what you’ll come up with.”

This is marriage- the hot kind.

Not just sexy hot but red-hot love you no matter what hot.

Want to know some of my secrets to winning? Let me give you a few tactics I use to out serve my man and you can keep your marriage red hot too. But you have to promise not to tell my man I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. Wink!

#1 Set him up for success

Everyday I look for ways to make Warren’s day easier or brighter. Like making sure he has everything he needs at his sink or closet. I simply look for ways to set his day up for success. Whether it is sending him a text of encouragement or cleaning up something that bugs him that doesn’t bother me.

I also look for ways to make his entry back home a success after a long day at work. We have a deal that he calls me when he’s headed home. That always gave me time to straighten up a bit, brush my hair and settle the kids down.

*Today look for one way you can serve your man and make his day better.

#2 Speak life-giving words to him.

God created a woman with the ability to carry life within her body and to bring that life into the world. But that is not the only way she brings life to the world.

You have the ability to bring life to any atmosphere you are in. Ever hear the phrase “If mumma ain’t happy nobody’s happy?” That’s because as a woman you can regulate the emotional thermostat of your home and your marriage. It is our words and our presences that do just that.

Women have a lot of influence in this area and the privilege of being God’s mouthpiece for life giving words. When we speak these kinds of words to our men we build them up and knock down any lies the enemy tries to plant to cause strife in our marriages.

There is a perk for this one.

When we determine to use words that bless and not curse, we find deep pleasure and satisfaction within ourselves. Speech that lifts up, lovingly directs or reinforces our man lifts us up too and strengthens the safe connection between us. And that feels super good.

What can you say to your man today that will lift him up?

#3 Touch as often as possible.

Are you wondering if your husband called me and told me to put this in my post? Ha.

As a mom you are touching and getting touched all day long. Everyone wants a piece of you. I get it. I have 5 kids.

Yet you can forget how important the brush of your hand or a hug can be. You may even be thinking, “Are you kidding me Mona? If I do that then he’ll get a totally different message and I’m too pooped to participate!”

That may be true. And if he does then use those kind words from number 2 to encourage him you adore him and his body and will make it happen another time.

But trust me touching your man will be life giving to you. Promise! Don’t avoid it.

A touch that last a lifetime

The touch of a man and woman who are married is a very special mysterious thing. Something just happens when two people who are in a covenant relationship touch skin to skin.

A simple outside touch ignites the inside oneness that God designed just for you and your man. And the longer you are married the deeper that oneness becomes. Trust me it really does.

Remember the first time he held your hand? Tingles went through it all the way to your toes. The physical connection was there for sure.

Now remember the way he touched your face after you had given birth to your first child. The depth of that feeling consumed your whole soul and body.

God created marriage so that each year that touch takes you to a new and deeper place. You aren’t going to want to miss it.

Culture Lies

The culture acts like the best connection you can have with your man is all-sexual and happens before you’re married. And after that it’s all-downhill. This is just a right out lie!

Don’t believe it.

I often have told my children that there’s no way to “try out marriage before marriage.” Sex outside of marriage or living together is in no way equal to the love of a covenant marriage God’s way. He has hidden wonders inside marriage all along the way and you can experience them all.

This week look for special ways that your love is deeper than when you dated. Then today touch your man and remind him of how far you both have come.

No one wants to lose in the game of marriage. And while its true that a hot lasting marriage takes hard work, it doesn’t have to if you, like us, play the “out serve each other game.” Try my secrets strategies and see if; setting him up for success, speaking life giving words to him, and deepening oneness by touching sets you up for a win in your marriage.

If you’d like more of my secrets or have a special marriage question  post it below I’d love to help.

And share this with a friend that could use a little gaming in her marriage too.

Hugs,

Mona

5 Essentials You Need to Know to Raise Secure Kids

5 Essentials You Need to Know to Raise Secure Kids 150 150 Mona Corwin

Ever look at your kids and wonder how the same kids living in the same house could be so different?

I mean one kid will crumble under a serious correcting glance and the other one has you feeling like CPS might be coming soon. One might color all day and the other doesn’t want to do anything but talk.

Of course the answers isn’t difficult. They are all different because they were created different.

We all want our children to be secure in their abilities. But the more important goal is for them to find security in the Gift Giver himself- God.

I have 5 kids and none are the same. They don’t even dress the same except when they had to wear uniforms at school.

Consequently not every method or activity will work for every one of your kids. But not to worry. God gave you mumma eyes and you will be able to see and direct them.  In my “Design Your UnRivaled MomLife” the women are discovering their identity, callings and unique abilities. And as moms you can help your children find theirs too.

Helping them discover their identity and unique abilities is part of what mothering is all about. And you have a front row seat for the action.

I’ve been front row watching for years and my best piece of advice…

Don’t miss the greatest treasure about their gifts and talents which is this – they come special to them from God.

We all want our children to be secure in their abilities. But the more important goal is for them to find security in the Gift Giver himself- God.
Here are 5 points to grow secure kids:

#1. Point them to the gift giver – God.

Show them from Gensis that they were created in God’s image and have value because of His love and not in their performance.

#2.  They have a part to play.

Not only did God create them in his image He also created them uniquely for the timeslot they live in.

#3. Gifts and Talents make life fun and fulfilling.

You want them to enjoy their gifts and talents but to also understand that they were given to bless others too. It is through these special traits that God’s character and love shows up.

#4. It takes time.

They don’t have to be the best or perfect at a gift or talent for it to be fun. Just grow and learn and that you will be there to help.

#5. Security only comes from God.

Being good at something can give you confidence and that’s a good thing. But if your security and purpose is found in your gifts and talents you will never fully enjoy them. Knowing that God gives gifts and talents with a path and a plan in mind keeps us looking to Him for direction and success.

Life can be confusing as you are growing and that’s why God gave kids parents. Parents are the ones that help and direct. How wonderful to know that someone is watching over you and will help you find the way. And pointing them to the Gift Giver is the best way to raise kids that not only find security in God but also find refuge, grace and love too.

What special things do you see in each of your children? Make a list and start asking God to help you find their gifts and talents.

Share this with another mom you love.

win an epic marriage fight

How to “Win” an Epic Marriage Fight

How to “Win” an Epic Marriage Fight 2048 1357 Mona Corwin

So it just may have been a big marriage fight… maybe even epic. The kind that happens in marriage and you know is going to go more than one round. It was going south fast and I knew that I was going to have to back down and give my man a break. But I was resisting because I really wanted to win.

As the argument started and I could feel the anger welling up in my soul I thought, this is not good timing. We are 2 days from my trip to Nashville and 2 weeks from the “just us” vacation we are so looking forward to. I knew I really should back down and forget it.

Yet good timing or not, it was an issue we needed to address. The conversation was getting heated and then bam it was a full-blown argument. You’d think after all these years of marriage I’d be better at this.

Would we be able to get it worked out? Would I have to disregard what I thought I needed just because of bad timing? Or would we be able to press in and do the hard work of marriage?

Ever been there?

If you’ve been around me for very long, you will quickly see that I am crazy in love with my man. Actually it’s really quite easy because he’s an amazing man. He loves God and his family sometimes beyond reason, a true example of how Christ treats the church. He’s a champion for the widows and orphans that cross his path. And he is the still be best looking guy I have ever seen!

Yet it happens.

I’d like to tell you that the longer you are married the easier it gets or that that epic fights only happen at the beginning of marriage. Or even that just because you married a great guy and you love each other that you won’t argue or disagree. Nope, lil mumma, I just can’t make those promises.

However, there is something that I can promise you. If you keep going and keep practicing communication, the disagreements will be easier to resolve. And while you may not always win, if you walk in love, love will always win.

You see it’s not about you getting your way or winning anyway. It’s all about love and persevering within the wonderful mystery of marriage.

God’s design of marriage is perfect. It is a mysterious reflection of Christ and the church. It has no flaws but, we, the people who engage in it, do have flaws. Somehow in His great wisdom God knew marriage would teach us miraculous things, things that just having a boyfriend/girlfriend/sex partner relationship could never teach us.

We can trust that marriage will help correct the flaws in us and create a oneness that this mystery of marriage promises.

The tug and pull conflicts within marriage are one of those mysteries. It isn’t just a negative part that needs to be plucked out, it in fact has purpose and when done correctly will produce the fruit of deeper intimacy.

Feel any better? Nah, I didn’t think so. None of us want to think tug and pull is awesome. We want to live in Hollywood’s happily forever after.

Here’s some truth.

What if Hollywood lied? What if romance novels deceived? What if the marriage wasn’t supposed to make us happy it was suppose to make us holy? Gary Thomas’ stellar book Sacred Marriage address just that question. I highly recommend it. Years ago when I encountered it, a new revelation of the purpose and approach to marriage changed the way I approached my own marriage.

It’s a beautiful dance, this thing called marriage. At it’s core it’s about the rhythm of serving each other and helping the other person become all God created them to be.

Sometimes being my husband’s helpmate means that I have to say things that help him and our marriage. Even if it means that there will be a tug and pull or even an epic fight.

The cool thing about this dance of marriage is that while I help my husband see things that need to be corrected, my husband lovingly helps me see my own flaws. Yep, that’s the tug and pull. But it’s within this dance that we serve one another and grow and change.

The big point is, God created you to bless and help your man. And he was created to bless and help you become all you were created to be in Christ.

The two that were joined together as one during that romantic marriage ceremony are still one, even when it gets heated.

  • Don’t resist the tug and pull of conflict in your relationship.
  • Allow the back and forth of the struggle as you work through an issue.
  • When it gets heated and you want to battle remember your mate is truly on your side.
  • Be quick to listen, slow to anger and resist becoming offended.
  • Walk in love and choose a servant’s heart.
  • And never forget to humble yourself, ask for forgiveness and give it, as well.

Bottom line: give your guy a break, take the best from the tug and pull and discard the rest.

Wondering how our recent tug and pull ended up?

Well, the dust settled and angry words were apologized for and quickly forgiven. We then spent some honest time with servant’s hearts and had a constructive covenant tug and pull. We both heard the other’s need and agreed to do better. Friend, it isn’t fun, that “tug and pull”. But don’t be afraid of it. Lean in and learn to do it with a servants heart and you will find that an epic marriage fight will produced an epic marriage.

Yep, love wins every time.

Stay on His Mind all Day

How To Stay On His Mind All Day

How To Stay On His Mind All Day 2048 2048 Mona Corwin

Remember when you were first dating and your man gave you a smile and said you were on his mind all day? But now after being married awhile, the mortgage and working hard for the family is what is most likely taking up his thoughts. Want a few ideas for how you can gain back some of that mental real estate and stay on his mind all day?

I got some.

First, get excited

I don’t want ya’ll pouting and grumbling that your man is too busy to think of you or that you shouldn’t have to figure out ways to drop into his brain. Sweet one it’s just the part of marriage that people are talking about when they say, “work at your marriage.” And guess what? When you get the hang of it I think you’ll have fun playing around with his mind just like you did when you were dating.

Reality Check

Let’s face it as moms we can be just as distracted as our guys. We get caught up in the hustle of diapers and doing the motherhood thing. Romance and marriage end up taking a back seat.

It happens to our men too. They are working hard to provide and take care of us. Men feel a heavy responsibility to lead, feed, protect and provide for their family. So let’s just give each other grace and help each other out.

Drop in on His mind

It’s a busy world and most of us don’t have hours to gaze into each other’s eyes over coffee. But you can show up on a text message, voicemail or inbox as many times a day as you want.

A simple: “How are you?” “Thinking of you.” Or “Hey Babe its all most date night and I can’t wait to cuddle.” Is enough to break into his thoughts and drop some love into his brain. Trust me it will put a smile on his face as thoughts of you invade his mind. Giving him a thought hug from you. And that smile will continue as he ponders how blessed he is with you for a wife. Oh and psst… don’t follow up with “will you get lettuce on the way home?” Let your sweet words be the last thing lingers around in his thoughts.

Be Intentional

Yep there it is again. I know most of the advice I give encourages you towards intentionality. But honestly we just don’t drift into good habits or good marriages.

Be proactive.

Connecting intentionally will help keep you on his mind and you on his.

  • Set your phone alarm and no matter what you’re doing… stop and connect with your man.
  • Timers work for the evenings too. We all need a reminder now and again. Set your timer for 8:00 pm and find him in the house and give him a big hug and kiss and tell him how happy you are that he’s all yours.
  • And what if those timers had ringtones of songs that remind you of him?

Stuck?

Stuck on what to say as you connect? Has it been a hard season and you don’t want to say anything nice?

  •  Stir up your memories of better times and borrow from your own romance story. Share those memories with him.
  • And instead of your phone wallpaper filled with pictures of your kids or dogs. Plaster that thing with your favorite picture of him. You know the one that makes you giggle on the inside. Yep that one.

Study your man

You know like you did when you first started dating him. Remember when you saw him and he didn’t know you were watching. You’d notice everything about him.

Try this:

  • Take a few minutes and sneak a peek at him in action. Watching how sweet he talks to your kids. How he jiggles his foot when he’s watching the game. Enjoy the how that “cute date guy” turned into the man that sits at your table and shares your bed. Make a mental list of the things that only you know because you’re his girl. Trust me this will make you smile like you did when you were first dating. You’ll have lots of material to drop into his mind with an unexpected text or voicemail.

Stop calling Him “Hey”

We can all fall into this trap the “hey will you pick up the kids?” Or “Hey I got a new dress.” But should we? This guy is not some random “hey” he’s your main squeeze. Calling him by a name no one else calls him is one quick way to take him to that mental real estate that only you occupy.

Maybe you had a pet name for him when you were dating or maybe you still do. There is nothing that breaks into a man’s mind faster than a title that’s just for him and him alone.

Don’t have one? Check out this list. Got some fresh ones for myself here.

200 Cute Names to Call Your Boyfriend

Dating Does You Good

I know everyone says this. But guess why? Because it works! Read any marriage material and you will find the same advice. Dating grounds you both and helps you connect. And if there is an imbalance in your marriage then there is one way to correct it. Get things focus on the thing that matters, you and him.

Balance [bal-uh-ns]:

Applying the appropriate amount of attention in the

proper place at the proper time.

In simple terms: Go on a date and look at him.

  • Put your attention on him and nothing else for a few hours.
  • Don’t talk about the kids for the first 15 min.
  • Just look at him and remember all the things that made you tingle when you first met.
  • Call a truce and agree not to talk about tough topics… like the ones that lead to heated conversations.
  • Do physical stuff on your date… and I don’t mean sex. Go for a walk, go bowling, find a nearby park and take you dinner with you.

More Date Night Advice

If only he would…

Wishing he’d be the one to drop in on your mind? Wish he would set up a surprise date? Bring you a treat? Kiss your neck for 5 min? Stop waiting for him and you mirror what you think is missing in your marriage. I did this for years and it just might be my secret weapon.

I know what he’s thinking

NO YOU DON’T! Stop assuming you know what he’s thinking. As intuitive as we are as women we really can’t read minds, especially a man’s mind. We are just wired different. But that doesn’t mean we can’t learn and use that knowledge to grow closer.

So, don’t assume just ask. Here are a few conversation starters.

  • Politics, sports, the newest gadget on the market?
  • What were you thinking when you were first dating?
  • What was your favorite memory?
  • Treat him like the super cute guy who’s taking you and sharing the evening with instead of the guy you only share the mortgage with.

For more conversation starters check out my friend Susie Albert Miller and her “Fun and Fast Conversation Starter List” at http://www.susiemiller.com/

You really can be on his mind just like you were when you were dating. It just takes a little planning and intentionality. Your marriage is worth timers going off, reminders, texting and planning. So get creative. If you have some of your own hints to share drop them in the comment section below we are all learning. And share this post with some of your BFF’s who might want to stay on their man’s mind too.

Fifty Shades of Gray

“Fifty Shades of Gray” Q & A

“Fifty Shades of Gray” Q & A 2048 2048 Mona Corwin

This isn’t the post I want to write for Valentine’s. I wanted to write something peppy and Pinterest-like. But, I must be true to my promise to be genuine with you.

First, let me say that it’s my honor and greatest joy to serve you with information and encouragement in your womanhood. I hold the relationship of mentor and friend tenderly in my heart.

With that said, let me start…

I long to see women living in the fullness of their design and that includes sex.

In recent decades, the line between black and white regarding sex has blurred to gray. So it was no surprise that a book like Fifty Shades of Gray was written.

What did surprise me was that 100 million women have read the book. What saddened my heart was many of them were Christian women. What shocked me was that the movie would be released on Valentine’s Day. A day meant for love and commitment was the day when potentially millions of women would be seeing exactly the opposite.

“There is an attack on what true love feels like to a woman and
what true love looks like in a relationship.”

Mona Corwin

It was then that I realized if I was going to be true to my promise to talk about the hard stuff, I would have to write a post I had been putting off.

As a spiritual mentor, I’ve received many questions regarding this book/movie and others like it. Wanting to be helpful to those I mentor, I studied erotica, intimacy and the effects of it all on spirituality and marriage.

Will you take a moment to read a few questions I have received along with answers I have given? As you do, will you hear the answers given in my most tender voice – not one of judgment, but one of sisterhood that would never want you hurt or deceived.

Question: “I have longings that my husband isn’t meeting. Isn’t it ok to read books like Fifty Shades of Gray?”

Answer: While sex is gratifying to you as an individual, it is ultimately designed as a covenant between two people. God created sex to be enjoyed within a covenant called marriage. Anything outside of that will never satisfy. It is the only place where the wonder, adventure and fun of sex in covenant can be fully experienced.

  • Even research agrees. The National Survey on Christian Female Sexuality highlights that married Christian women have the most fun and most sex of all women in the study.[1] Yet there are still women all over the country, including Christian women, who are lonely and desperate for intimacy.
  • The temptation to fulfill their longing is everywhere. Then, along comes something erotic wrapped in romance and they believe the lie that it is ok and they begin to indulge in it. While it’s true that the longings will be satisfied in the moment, it is also tragically true that the indulgence is at great expense. The temporary indulgence will actually move them further away from the intimacy they long for.

“The truth is, erotica erodes intimacy each time making it even
harder to fulfill the longing of a woman’s heart.”

Mona Corwin

Question: “It’s not like I’m having an affair, it’s just fantasy, so why not?”

Answer:

  • Bringing another person into your sexual life, even through fantasy, is a violation of the design and covenant. It is very difficult to be in a fantasy and reality at the same time. One interrupts the other. And the one that can be manipulated by your mind to please you will win. Aka: the fantasy. Again, fantasy erodes the intimacy between a man and a woman with other people in your thoughts or in the room. Erotica erodes the connection between you and your mate.
  • Erotica shifts the focus from us to me. It makes sexual satisfaction solely about self-satisfying and not the God-kind of intimacy.
  • God’s design: a relationship where each person is able to share themselves and their feelings with vulnerability and love. A self-giving, life-long friendship where in safety you can know and be known and be real. Real is always better than fantasy. Books like Sacred Marriage, by Gary Thomas, suggest that sex is actually giving, not getting.

“Authentic sexuality is highly fulfilling.
Expressed in covenant love, it moves us to share
our lives, bodies and our very essence with our mates.”

Mona Corwin

Question: “I’m not hurting anyone and it spices up our sex life. I’m married, so that’s ok, right?”

Answer:

  • While it’s true that hormones and chemicals might temporarily fire things up, that blaze isn’t going to stay burning without adding more wood to the fire. Science shows that the ability to fire it up the next time will require more and different erotica. This means one book or one movie will never be enough.
  • We are familiar with the thought that pornography for men is very visual. However, for women, it is highly relational.
  • Science shows that it starts as harmless romantic stories or soap operas to online erotica and eventually to porn. Don’t be fooled. It happens to women every day, whether they are married or single.

Question: “I’m single and I have desires. So that’s ok, right?”

 Answer:

  • Yes, your desires are real and yes you need to address them in the light – not in the dark or in any shade of gray. Some things really are black and white. Thinking you’re saving yourself for marriage and using erotica as an outlet? You’re deceived. The stakes are too high for you as a woman and for your husband if you marry.
  • Do not be condemned by your own sexual sensations. Learn how to deal with them in a godly way. Honest community and resources that answer your questions from the Bible are good places to find answers to hard questions. I recommend a few of the best books and websites at the end of this article.
  • Erotica and romance will draw you out and connect you in a way that can easily step over the line of romance to pornography. This will create unrealistic and harmful expectations for men.
  • Fantasy and erotica can become your “mate,” and worse, can become your “god.”
  • Women of all seasons are turning to pornography of different kinds to meet their desires.[2] Sadly, the fastest growing users of online pornography are teenage girls.[3]

Good News

Yet, there is some good news this Valentine’s Day. God isn’t about the big NO for everything regarding sex. He’s all about the sex. He created it to be adventurous, fun and bonding. As women, perhaps it’s time we looked at the original intent of sex and start enjoying all of it. Frankly, I’m glad Christian women are asking questions and getting real answers. Here’s to Valentine’s Day and putting true romance back into the bedroom. Be a friend and Share this post today!
