[title size=”2″]What Is Mentoring?[/title]

Mentoring is a lifelong process that calls a believer into a deeper relationship with God. However, that process sometimes needs a kick-start in today’s program-driven churches. Research reveals that programs don’t equal spiritual maturity. Ex: I can balance my checkbook but that knowledge doesn’t make me an accountant. Becoming someone who is really good with numbers takes some extra education. In Christianity, after a person becomes a believer they too need to develop their knowledge about Christ and what that means to follow Him. This is not a new method of “doing church.” Actually, Christ modeled it with His 12 disciples and commissions us all to do the same in Matthew 28:19-20:

Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

[title size=”2″]New Buzz Word?[/title]

Why is “mentoring” the new buzz word? Church leaders are seeing a new generation of believers that have no idea how to live the Christian life, much less how to find the answers in their Bibles. Although fill in the blank Bible studies are fruitful, the method of sit still while I instill can be lacking. Equipping the believer is paramount, so when a crisis hits they will have the ability and tools for finding truth in God’s word themselves. God has the answers and he’s not hiding them from anyone.

Bill Hybels, pastor of Willow Creek Community Church, a church that brought the seeker-sensitive approach to church growth and evangelism, now believes that because discipleship has been left out of this approach, the church has suffered. Hybels said:

We made a mistake. What we should have done when people crossed the line of faith and become Christians, we should have started telling people and teaching people that they have to take responsibility to become ʻself feeders.ʼ We should have gotten people, taught people, how to read their bible between service, how to do the spiritual practices much more aggressively on their own.

In other words, spiritual growth doesnʼt happen best by becoming dependent on elaborate church programs, but through the age old spiritual practices of prayer, Bible reading, and relationships. And, ironically, these basic disciplines do not require multi-million dollar facilities and hundreds of staff to manage.

[title size=”2″]Why Embrace Mentoring?[/title]

A generation of absent fathers and feminist mothers have left today’s generations crying out for connection. They don’t buy into the “generation gap” theory. They don’t expect perfection. They simply desire encouragement, love and support. They long for someone to speak blessings over them and pray for them. They want to walk alongside the generation before them, gleaning wisdom from their victories and defeats. They want to hear the stories of God’s faithfulness and mighty wonders. Mentoring is more than one person helping another person in life. It’s allowing the Holy Spirit to teach both the knowledge of God and His character so that they can be His hands and feet to the world.  Psalm 78:4,6 tells us,

“We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD, about his power  and his mighty wonders. So the next generation might know them— even the children not yet born— and they in turn will teach their own children.”

Mentors and those who are mentored receive more than information. They are blessed by each other for now and generations to come. For something special happens when; the passion of youth ignites the mature, and the wisdom of the mature illuminates the youth. This infusion of passion and wisdom- can only be called unstoppable.

[title size=”2″]Biblical Strategy[/title]

Based on Matthew 28:19-20 and Titus 2 that calls women to teach women, to engage in intentional mentoring and walking together throughout life. We encourage and teach women to transform their lives by identifying the struggles and lies they believe and replacing them with Biblical truths. John 17:17 tells us, “Sanctify them in the truth, your word is truth.” John 8:32 proclaims, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” God’s word is so clear. Got to love that!

Personal mentoring provides:

• A safe environment. Making the process personal and private.
• The Holy Spirit to get to the point of things. Then He leads the way to healing and spiritual growth.
• Equipping women with the practical tools to grow spiritually; prayer, Bible study tools, etc.
• Fills the desire for cross-generational impact, support and blessing. Simply put, mentoring is designed by God to develop authentic community connecting us to God and each other.

The beauty of mentoring is that it can vary. It can be one on one, or it can be a group with one mentor. Another variation starts with a group time of learning and then breaks off into one on one for follow up. The methods may be different for different people, but the focus is still the same. Biblical truth and practical tools are foundational to every meeting. Through relationship, individual plans can be developed for growth. Not to create yet another checklist, but to grow step by step, always allowing the Holy Spirit who is the real mentor in the ministry of mentoring, to lead.

Women who mentor and are mentored are equipped with more than just knowledge of how to be a woman.
